T
he July 29th thru 31st SVRA New Jersey Speed Tour saw 14 Sports 2000s entered for the late summer festival. All three days were clear and hot with reasonable humidity Friday and Saturday. SVRA did a nice job keeping everything on time and giving everyone lots of track time.
Race 1 on Saturday saw a drag race to turn one between the pole sitter John Thompson, and Brent Gernert, who qualified a mere 0.339 behind in second place. A spirited run to the checkered flag saw Gernert winning by another scant 0.417 of a second over Thompson. Rob Sherwood finished third another 0.336 behind second place.
Sunday’s feature saw Thompson on the pole again and he pulled out an almost five second lead over Gernert. By mid-race Gernert had cut that lead in half and caught Thompson, whose car was running hot, four laps from the end. Gernert went on to cruse to the win, with Thompson Second, and Trey Dusek, after a nice race, came in just 0.079 behind Thompson for third.
